1. Exchanging currency
When you need currency exchange services in mainland China, most banks can satisfy. However, you are recommended to go to Bank of China, especially when you are exchanging minor currencies (currencies rarely used outside the original country) since Bank of China can provide services for most types of currencies around the world.
Taking US dollars as an example, if you want to convert USD cash into RMB, some banks, such as the Bank of China and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) accept overseas Visa, MasterCard, or American Express cards to convert. The maximum exchange amount is 50,000 USD per year.
You can also withdraw at most 3,000 RMB per day with an overseas credit card at most ATMs in mainland China. Exchange rates vary daily.
If you want to convert less than 3,000 RMB per day into USD, you can go to Bank of China. Since small bank branches may not have much USD cash on hand, a reservation call to the bank may be required.
2. Opening a bank account
It is recommended to have a local ICBC bank account in Guangzhou if you are a foreign employee of SCUT and you are staying for long-term in the campus. An ICBC account makes salary receiving and daily life much easier.
When go for account opening, bring your original passport and a photocopy. ICBC charges 15 RMB for account opening and requires at least 1 RMB as an initial deposit.
3. ATM Machines
If you are using a credit card, or a debit card, issued by Bank of China, ICBC or any other major banks in mainland China, it can be accepted by most ATM machines.
If you are using a card issued by banks from outside mainland China, please check the credit card brand logos (for example logos of Visa, MasterCard or Union Pay) on the ATM machine to see if it supports your card.
4. Reporting a lost card
The first thing to do when your bank card is lost is to dial your bank’s service number to report it. You might be required to go to the bank in person with your original passport to re-open the account.
