[Abstract]
Size effect (SE) ubiquitously exists in different disciplines, such as physics, materials science, and the engineering arena, including mechanical and manufacturing engineering. SEs are involved in different size scales ranging from macro-, meso-, micro-, and even nano-scale, and induce different behaviours,phenomena and their scatters, which are really elusive and tantalizing. In this talk, the understanding of SE and its different manifestations in terms of behaviour, phenomena and scatter in different size scales and domains,including engineering mechanics, materials science and manufacturing, will be articulated, discussed and analyzed as to how it affects manufacturing by using deformation-based manufacturing as an instance will be elucidated. The talk will give a panorama of SE from different aspects in different domains.
